工党外交事务发言人菲尔·高夫日前指出，由于政府预算缩减，外交部每4个员工中就将有1位被裁员。
外交部已被勒令每年削减四千万纽元，这将导致多达300位员工失去工作。
我赞成要求政府部门提高效率、减少不必要的浪费。然而大肆削减的危险是使得起着关键作用的一线员工失去工作。
如今已有超过30个政策类的职位被空出。这意味着保障新西兰经济、政治利益所必需的核心工作被忽略了。
这是假节约。基础的政策制定工作其实是以高价外包给了顾问们。
那些可能在海外遇到麻烦而需要使领馆援助的新西兰人则更有理由担忧了。据初步的计划，新西兰人如果到一个发展中国家旅居、或在那里被关监，其家人将不能再从领事馆获援，而是被建议打0800电话求助。
要想在海外推进我国的贸易与政治利益，新西兰需要强有力的决策建议和代表。
掏空外交部、削弱那些素有敬业、有能力之誉的员工们的士气，将最终损害我们全体新西兰人的利益。

Foreign Affairs job cuts will hit all of us
As many as one in four employees in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs could be sacked as a result of cost-cutting by the Government, Labour’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson Phil Goff says.
“Foreign Affairs has been ordered to make cuts of $40million a year, which could result in up to 300 people losing their jobs.
“I have no problem with the Ministry being required to find efficiencies and cut unnecessary spending. But there is a real danger in a slash and burn approach which will see core front-line staff out of work,” Phil Goff said.
“Over 30 policy positions have already been left vacant. That means core work necessary for defending New Zealand’s economic and political interests is being neglected.
“It is false economy. Basic policy work is being contracted out to consultants at an inflated cost.
“And there is real cause for concern about New Zealanders who might find themselves in trouble overseas and require consular assistance. According to initial planning documents families of Kiwis hospitalised in a developing country or jailed may get an 0800 number instead of consular help.
“New Zealand needs strong policy advice and representation when it comes to pushing our trade and political interests overseas.
“Gutting the Ministry and demoralising staff who have a reputation for commitment and competency will be damaging to all of us as New Zealanders,” Phil Goff said.
