National refuses to rule out privatisation of public services

The National Government’s plan to privatise public services and cut jobs in the public sector is now clear, Labour State Services Spokesperson Grant Robertson says.
“In Parliament today Tony Ryall refused to rule out privatisation in health, education or housing. Its clear that the tired privatisation recipe from the 1990’s has been reheated,” Grant Robertson said.
“Put alongside the appointment of Don Brash to run the Government’s productivity taskforce, National’s real agenda is now obvious.
“New Zealand rejected Don Brash and the National Party’s privatisation agenda in 2005, but now National has found a way for the taxpayer to fund Don Brash’s privatisation crusade.
“Bill English and Treasury are definitely running the show when it comes to public services.
“We all want public services such as schools and hospitals to be as efficient as possible, and public servants are well aware that they need to tighten their belts in the recession.
“We need to support hardworking public servants such as teachers and nurses to work with the communities they serve to develop innovative and responsive public services. Gutting the public service and contracting out will do nothing to help New Zealand overall.
“Having contractors more interested in turning a profit than people means there is no guarantee that services will be better and those New Zealand taxpayers will be receiving value for money.
“Privatisation might suit National Party politics but it doesn’t do anything for the New Zealand people,” Grant Robertson said.
